Many thanks to Wenkai Bian for preparing the following report. Click here to download the report in PDF format.

In September 2023, the 30th quadrennial CIE conference convened in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with 431 attendees from 41 countries, including six representatives from Australia and two representatives from New Zealand.

A principal focus of this conference is the alteration in the management of CIE. Jennifer Veitch is set to succeed Peter Blattner as the incoming President. Meanwhile, Tony Bergen will assume the role of Vice President Technical, departing from his position as the director of CIE Division 2. On 22nd September, Tony, as the outgoing director, hosted the first half of the Division 2 meeting to summarise the work completed in the previous years before handing over to his successor.

Especially noteworthy, Tony Bergen received the De Boer Services Gold Pin at this conference, an acknowledgment of his distinguished service to the CIE's organization and administration.

Dr. Wenye Hu, representing Australia, participated in the General Assembly Meeting. A key agenda item of the meeting was to determine the venue for the upcoming 31st quadrennial conference. The proposal by the China National Illuminating Committee to host the conference in Nanjing, China, in July 2027, was approved through a ballot in the GA.

During the "Energy Efficiency" session, Wenkai Bian, a PhD candidate from the University of Sydney, showcased a pioneering advancement from the university's lighting lab. He introduced a smart dimming technique that can precisely shape the desired lighting across various areas while minimizing energy consumption. A demonstrated case study in an office environment revealed the technique's capability to enhance several lighting performances simultaneously.
